- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large skillet, cook ground beef and diced onion over medium heat until browned, about 7-10 minutes. Drain excess fat.
- In a mixing bowl, combine sour cream, cream of mushroom soup, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper; whisk until smooth.
- Grease a 9x13 baking dish with butter. Layer half the potatoes, followed by half the beef mixture, then half the creamy sauce; repeat layers.
- Sprinkle cheddar cheese on top, cover with foil, and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden.
- Let cool for 5-10 minutes before serving.
