Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a medium bowl, combine 1 cup of warm water (110°F), 1 tablespoon of sugar, and 2 teaspoons of instant yeast. Allow to sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 4 cups of flour and 1 teaspoon of salt. Create a well and pour in yeast mixture. Stir until a dough forms, then knead for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  3. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise for 30 minutes until doubled in size.
  4. Preheat oven to 425°F. Punch down dough and turn out onto a floured surface. Divide into 8 pieces, roll into 24-inch ropes, and twist into pretzel shapes.
  5. Boil 4 cups of water and add ¼ cup of baking soda. Boil each pretzel for 30 seconds, then remove with a slotted spoon and place on a baking sheet.
