Ingredients

For the Brisket
  • 1 piece Beef Brisket Trim excess fat for less greasiness.
  • 2 tbsp Avocado Oil Can substitute with vegetable or olive oil.
  • 1 large Onion, sliced Any variety of onion can be used; yellow is preferred.
For the BBQ Sauce
  • 1.5 cups BBQ Sauce Use a homemade version or your favorite store-bought brand; Stubb’s Sticky Sweet BBQ sauce is recommended.
  • 0.5 cups Beef Broth Low-sodium options can be utilized to manage salt levels.
For the Dry Rub
  • 1 tbsp Brown Sugar
  • 1 tbsp Smoked Paprika
  • 0.5 tbsp Chili Powder
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 tsp Onion Powder
  • 1 tsp Cayenne Pepper Adjust based on spice preference.
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Black Pepper

Equipment

  • slow cooker
  • Skillet
  • medium bowl
  • Small Bowl

Method

Step‑by‑Step Instructions
  1. In a medium bowl, combine the BBQ sauce and beef broth, whisking until well blended. Set this mixture aside for later use.
  2. In a small bowl, thoroughly mix together all the dry rub ingredients: brown sugar, smoked paprika, chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Set the dry rub aside while prepping the brisket.
  3. Pat the beef brisket dry with paper towels. Generously massage the dry rub all over the brisket.
  4. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat, add avocado oil, and sear the brisket for 3-4 minutes on each side until browned.
  5. Place the seared brisket into the slow cooker, surround with sliced onions, and pour the prepared BBQ sauce over it.
  6. Cover and cook on LOW for 8-10 hours, or 6-8 hours for smaller briskets. The brisket is ready when it shreds easily with a fork.
  7. Once cooked, remove the brisket, slice or shred, and mix it back into the BBQ sauce before serving.
